There are numerous ways to address a hair loss condition. It can range from creative ways to conceal it using camouflaging products or hairpieces to getting surgical procedures such as hair transplants. Taking medication has also been among the common ways to encourage hair growth. While these methods have a certain degree of effectiveness, they also bring with it some side effects. The benefits of each might not be as long lasting or worth the cost of the remedy. There is also the recovery time and waiting period to consider before any results may be appreciated.

A scalp micropigmentation treatment is a procedure that can address these concerns. It is a safe, fast and proven remedy for hair loss that can provide immediate results minus the side effects. The patient is able to fully embrace his condition while being able to conceal it at the same time. This is achieved by shaving off any existing hair to expose the scalp. An SMP technician uses special pigments layered in a pre-determined hair pattern in order to cover the bare areas. The final effect is an illusion of hair in the form of a “just-shaven” hairstyle. Note that SMP application does not end here. It may also be used to aid existing hair upon a thinning scalp look more lush and full by “filling-in” bald gaps with pigments. This can likewise be used to cover any scarring caused by hair transplant procedures or trauma to the head.

Scalp micropigmentation is easy to maintain. All that is required is to keep the scalp clean and moisturised daily. Regular shaving of existing hair is required if the SMP that was applied is a “just-shaven” pattern. This would keep its appearance uniform, making it less susceptible to detection. It is also recommended to limit exposure to the sun because it may cause the pigment to fade faster. Putting on a cap or a hat is necessary should it be unavoidable to do so.

These aftercare steps are necessary to prolong its effects. This method has been around for only 12 years and not much data have been gathered to accurately determine the length of its effectiveness. Out of the cases studied however, it was found that SMP could last anywhere between four to six years before any pronounced fading occurs. An SMP patient would simply have to return to the clinic to receive some touch-up treatment for their scalp. This could also be a good opportunity to consider reshaping their hair pattern into a more updated look. Please note this is not a re-application of the original treatment, but just a short refresher session. If the client didn’t have any touch-ups they can expect their pigmentation to remain visible for 20+ years, albeit faded.

How a patient maintains their SMP is not the only factor that determines its longevity. There are also other factors to consider such as their skin type, the weather in their location as well as the quality of inks that their SMP provider used. The method of how the pigment was applied could also play a role in the length of its appearance. Any prospective SMP patient should inquire about these topics before proceeding. Being able to determine if the service provider can provide a quality treatment is key toward a long lasting and satisfactory SMP.
